Pompano Beach High School is a prestigious school located in the city of Pompano Beach. Every year, it takes upon the challenge of hosting an NSDA Qualifier tournament for the events of Congress and Big Questions. Congress is an event in which students are in a mock legislative assembly competition where students draft bills and resolutions which they and their peers later debate and vote to pass into law and then take action. Big Questions is a debate event in which students debate about worldviews and human ethics. Since it was a qualifier tournament, whoever wins from both events automatically qualifies for the National NSDA tournament that is hosted in June. It is imperative that this tournament be well organized and run as smooth as possible.
Due to the amazing students and staff, Ms.Petit and Debate Booster club, Pompano Beach High School was able to pull off yet another flawless tournament. The students helped out immensely as they volunteered and found sponsors for the tournament that donated food and money to help feed the competitors and judges. Each student was assigned a job during the tournament to help out. They really enjoyed their roles as one volunteer said, “I enjoyed my role at the tournament. I got to meet fellow debaters from other schools and see their experience as they competed in the chamber”(Steve Padmanaban). It seems as if everything was running perfectly throughout the tournament as one of the tabroom monitors, Joanna Abel, says, “It was one of the smoothest tabrooms I have ever seen.” The volunteers even tried to help the competitors and lighten the mood as one of the volunteers said, “All of the competitors had a smile on their face. I was in charge of the music and it helped rid of nerves” (Andrea Ventura). The tournament went extremely smooth and has set an example to the whole state of Florida of how to host a tournament. This has been yet another successful tournament hosted by Pompano Beach High School.
